A few years back, I wrote an article on my thoughts on the so-called “War on Christmas” and why I felt it was such a useless waste of time and energy to look at things in that vein. I actually started this piece to re-write my thoughts on the subject again, and to add some similar notation and sentiment to the notion of the “War on Halloween/Samhain” that has cropped up over the past couple of years. And I just couldn’t find myself writing on the topic again. Its not that my point of view has changed – hardly. My views on this stuff remains the same. What keeps me from getting the writing juices flowing on this – is that I just don’t see the point. People who are going to find something to get fired-up and offended over the symbology or treatment of whomever and whatever in relation to these two points on the Wheel (and others – as I’m sure that there will be people seeking evidence of a “War on Easter” or a “War on Wednesdays”) — these folks aren’t going to be swayed one way or another by what I (or others) have to say. Their minds are already made up. Plus, if they are going to be offended by the inclusion or exclusion of something as it relates to some religious holiday or observance — I just don’t have the time to argue and fight with them over their perspective. I’d rather spend my time enjoying those particular times with my friends and family…and focus on things that are important to those times.
I remember a line — I can’t remember if its from a movie or an interview or what have you — but it goes something like this: “What if we had a war and no one showed up?” Indeed…that sounds quite intriguing to me…and a sentiment that I am most likely to endorse. Instead of playing at war and the hurt-feelings parade….I’ll spend my pursuits in something a bit more constructive…and something that makes me happy, instead of reaching for the spiritual/political/religious heart-burn relief medicines.
